One thing that takes a little getting used to with chess is pattern recognition. If you are wondering what's going on, on the board right here, I will tell you. This is a mating pattern named Anastasia's Mate which was derived from a novel written by an author named Wilhelm Heinse in 1903. In this particular puzzle it's whites turn to move. White sacrifices the queen on the h7 square putting the king in check and forcing him to capture. The white rook moves to the h5 square securing a checkmate. The black king has nowhere to go because the white knight on the e7 square controls the g8 square.
